Get Closer

I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus from blogging simply because I have been busy, busy, busy with other things besides photography. Now that my second photography class starts (already!) tomorrow night I figure I better get my act together and post pictures from my last class assignment.

The last assignment was outdoors at Camosun Interurban Campus. We had to use a macro lens (I don’t have one because I am poor) or something that you could get relatively close to a subject with. I went with my 50mm 1.8 for all you camera geeks out there because I love the depth of field I get with this lens in comparison with my kit lens that is a 18-55mm.  For the assignment we had to pick a subject, get in as close as possible and manually set the focus and leave it there. No moving it. Ever. It’s harder than it sounds. What it makes you do is use your physical body to get your subject in focus and not rely on the camera. It makes you move around a lot and really really concentrate and slow down. Slight movements will make your subject out of focus.  I loved the assignment because I am all about small details and love playing with depth of field to get a great picture. Here are a few of my faves from the day:
