Class Assignment

I’m taking a photography class at Camosun called “And Now For Something Completely Different”. It’s all about thinking outside of the box when it comes to your photography and pushing the envelope. I am LOVING this class and I already feel like it has taught me a lot.  Our first assignment is a self portrait but you can’t be physically in front of the camera.  I’m sure most people’s first instinct is to use a reflective surface like a puddle or mirror for a self shot or to photograph something that represents them (favourite shoes?).  I wanted to do something a little different and came up with the idea of composing a photograph with snapshots of different parts of my body. Originally I envisioned hanging them from a tree and using the pictures as metaphorical leaves. Yeah, not so much. On paper it sounds like a great idea but in practice it was impossible to create what I had in mind.

I’m sure I looked like a crazy person trekking into the bush with my camera, tripod, fishing wire, scissors, tape and other various tools required.  After fighting with the wind and the fishing wire I quickly realized that my idea wasn’t going to work.  Trial and error led me to the following two pictures of which I’m not sure which one to use. I sent my teacher the picture on the right but now I’m second guessing my choice and am thinking of sending him the first one (I have until Wednesday to decide).  Hmmmm decisions, decisions.
